Each month Shannon Mantrop will have a new article on golf specific fitness and training...

The Fitness Components Required for Optimal Golf Biomechanics: POWER

As stated in the previous article, the golf swing can be described by the kinetic link or sequential summation of forces principle. This principle implies that in order to maximize club head speed, the swing should begin with the larger more powerful segments (eg hips and trunk) and continue in a sequential manner to the smaller segments (eg upper arm and hands) (Hume et al., 2005). In order to optimize this sequence the body needs optimal mobility, stability, strength and power. If you have been following each article up until this point, you have the knowledge to start creating a powerful golf swing. Power cannot be maximized or trained efficiently until optimal mobility, stability and strength have been achieved.

The Wall Drill For Lag,
by Terry Carter

Once again I would like to talk about the power move in the golf swing and how to create it.

The power move is created by swinging the handle of the club thus creating a delay in the club-head as it swings to the ball. This position is called Lag. Here is another great power drill to create Lag-the true power move in the swing.

Take your setup position standing beside a wall, fence, or dome!! Preset your wrists so the club is about 6 inches away from the wall. Swing to the top of your backswing. Now from here, you have to avoid hitting the wall with the clubhead as you swing down to the ball. Meaning, you must swing the handle to create lag.. If you cast the clubhead you will hit the wall/fence/dome..

If you are concerned about damage to your wall, I would suggest flipping the club over and hanging onto the clubhead as apposed to the grip. This will give the same sensation but should avoid any property damage etc..

Watch the video on how to execute this drill as it is a NGA favourite.

ALSO: Send this to anyone you think could benefit and call us if you need help.

Good luck and happy golfing!
