Upper/Lower Body Separation

Golf fitness is not only about creating bodies that are stronger and more flexible, but it is also about creating and improving movement patterns. Movement pattern training retrains your body to move effectively. The ability to separate your upper body from your lower body in the golf swing is a movement pattern that is essential to an efficient golf swing.

Cane Drill -- by Grant Cook

One of the biggest reasons why people top the golf ball or miss the ball is because they lose their spine angle from the initial set-up to the impact position. To get the club-head back to the golf ball consistently, it is imperative that we maintain our spine angle and not come out of our posture until after we strike the golf ball. One body-specific drill that will help you feel like you are maintaining your spine angle throughout the swing is the Cane Drill.

Turn the club upside down with your target hand and hold onto the head of the club as you would hold onto a cane. Extend your target arm in front of you and get into your set-up position. Place the club in the middle of your stance and just let your trailside arm hang down under your chin as if you were holding onto a golf club. While looking at the butt end of the club (simulating keeping your eye on the ball), pretend to take a back swing with your trail arm about ˝ way back like you are shaking somebody’s hand. Now swing through under your target arm down your target line (railway track) as if you were to shake hands with someone on the other side. While holding this position, you should feel how your head stayed behind the ball, how your target leg has straightened as your hips start to turn toward the target AND you should feel how you have stayed down through the swing. When you go back to swinging your golf club, you need to have the same feeling in your body. This is how we maintain posture through the shot.

Try the Cane Drill and make sure you check out the video to see how it is done!
