Early Extension and Lead Hip Mobility

Early Extension is defined as a forward movement of the lower body towards the golf ball during the downswing. This swing fault can cause the arms to get stuck behind the body which can cause blocked shots (ball flight that goes straight right for a right handed player), and hook shots (ball flight that starts straight and curves left for a right handed player). If you struggle with these shots, video analysis can easily pick out this swing fault.

Shoulder Hip Drill -- by Terry Carter

As you may or may not know, there is a "sequence" that is developed by the proper movement of your body in your golf swing. This "sequence" is the coiling and uncoiling of your body in your back and through swing that helps to create power and consistency. We like to say that your upper body starts the back-swing, and the lower body controls the down-swing. For example: If you throw a ball, the sequence starts by stepping and shifting your lower body, followed by your upper body, then finally your arm and wrist. The golf swing uses a very similar motion.

So how can you work this into your golf swing?

I have the answer. It is called the "shoulder hip drill".

This drill is very simple and is to be done in the comfort of your home to develop "muscle memory".

This is how it works: From your set-up position (without a club) place your trail hand on your target shoulder, and your target hand on your trial hip. Pull your target shoulder back to a position behind the ball, while holding your trail shoulder in this position, pull your trail hip to the target. Be sure to keep your head behind the ball form start to finish. This technique will give you a sense of enormous torque as you unwind towards the target. Practice this drill as much as possible as it will help you develop the feeling you need to a golf swing in the proper "sequence".
